In February 1989 a few migrants from Singapore and Malaysia got together over lunch at the St Anne’s Parish Hall in Belmont and the Eurasian Association of W.A. was formed. Now, some 33 years later, the EAWA is known as the Australian Eurasian Association of W.A. (AEAWA) with over 300 members.
As the term Eurasian implies, the membership of AEAWA comprises people of European and Asian heritage, mainly from Singapore and Malaysia. This mix is reflected in some of the family names with origins in Portugal, Holland, and the United Kingdom.
The objectives of the AEAWA include:
- promoting the encouragement of interaction and co-operation with other like community organisations
- the preservation of the unique heritage and traditions of the Eurasian Community
- the promotion of social and recreational activities for its members and the wider community.
Over the years, membership has opened to include all members of the wider community, no matter what cultural background or country of origin.
The AEAWA’s activities are organised by a number of very active sub-committees: Community, Seniors, Functions, and Catering. The Association’s functions, including its monthly luncheons and quarterly dances, are so well attended that at times there are waiting lists for tickets.
